Lee Westwood fue votado como el golfista del año de la Gira Europea

 

Lee Westwood was voted as the European Tour’s Golfer of the Year for the fourth time in his career on Monday.

The 47-year-old had started the year, which was also the 27th year of his professional career, by winning the Abu Dhabi Championship. It also made him the only active golfer to win titles across four separate decades. Now he ended the year by being crowned as the tour’s champion for the fourth time. However, when he won this tour the first time, it was known as the Order of Merit title.

“I am very honored and extremely flattered to have been named European Tour’s golfer of the year as I know the competition for the award this year would have been extremely high,” said Westwood, who also won the accolade in 1998, 2000 and 2009.

Westwood wasn’t short of praise for the European tour either as they held the tournament in difficult times, amidst the coronavirus pandemic. He also hosted the British Masters in July. This was the tournament which marked the full resumption of the tour’s 2020 season.

Keith Pelley, the tours CEO, also had good things to say about Westwood.

“His performances and his professionalism are matched by his longevity and his commitment to European golf,” Pelley said.

“For Lee to call shortly before our resumption and ask what he could do to help the tour is testament to the person and the player he is.

To then go on to become the European Tour’s No. 1 player for a third time, 20 years after he first achieved that accolade, was a storybook way to end this most challenging of years,” he added.

Westwood is still firing on all cylinders even at this age. He finished inside the top 20 in six consecutive tournaments starting from the UK Championships in August to the Scottish Championships in October.
